My 12" PowerBook G4 is currently just about useless. It started
giving me hell an hour ago, apparently when I downloaded SpamSieve's
latest update (hunch).
Seems to be the Finder (hunch):
1) Desktop icons have all disappeared.
2) Finder seems to have gone nuts: cycles from Finder to whatever
Application/Utility is open endlessly every 3 - 4 seconds as if in a
loop (currently as I write this with Mail 2.0.5, Mail switches to
Finder, back and forth, and I therefore write with stops and starts
every 3 - 4 seconds). Plus, Finder bar at top of screen flashes on-
off-on etc... every 3-4 seconds and does not work.
3) Dock icons, except Finder, still seem to work.
4) I force-quit Mail, but it reopens by itself.
5) The Finder appears and disappears from the Force Quit Applications
screen (OPTION-COMMAND-ESCAPE) every 3 - 4 seconds.
Action taken:
a) I have restarted several times, once whilst pressing spacebar, to
no avail. The System Profiler 'Power On Self-Test' is reported as
"Passed".
b) I've run MacJanitor 1.2.1 and checked preferences with
Preferential Treatment 1.1.4 , to no avail. (using Dock icons to get
them started).
c) Using Dock Icons, I have unchecked the "Open at login" option for
applications and utilities such Mail, SpamSieve and Stickies.
d) Using OPTION-COMMAND-ESCAPE I have forced Finder relaunch, to no
avail.
e) Have verified and repaired permissions with disk repair utility on
Tiger install disk, to no avail.
f) Have created a new admin user account and logged into it. New
account works normally but I cannot repair my usual admin account
from there.
As I have no Desktop/Finder icons, and the Dock's Finder icon does
not respond, I cannot get to Preferences to trash Finder Preferences.
Upgraded from OS 10.4.3 to 10.4.4 a week ago, everything seemed
normal at the time.
I think I'm not a newbie, but I'm not much of a technical guy. This
is the first serious problem I've had for several years now.
All advice welcome.
TIA
Alain.
