I think I have it fixed! I've been listening to uninterrupted music for about 30 minutes now, playing on my P4. For anyone else experiencing this particular problem, the solution is quite simple. Simply edit the /etc/smb.conf file using Terminal and a suitable text editor. I used vi as it was the only thing available on my 10.2.6 machine. At the bottom of the [global] section, I added 2 lines as follows:

so_sndbuf=8192
so_rcvbuf=8192

Save the file and reboot the computer. That's about it. The biggest problem I had was forgetting about sudo. Under 10.2.x, the files are marked as read only in Terminal and one must be the root user to edit them. In any case, this solved my problem and I am grateful for all the replies I received.

Just a message from Doug...
