This drive still shows up fine in the Profiler.

And the problem is that the system doesn't even *try* to read the
media, not that it *can't* read the media.  Normally when you instert
a CD/DVD, the drive will spin it and try to determine what it is.

This does not happen.  Closing the tray with media does nothing.  The
drive does not spin.

I took the top metal cover off the drive so I could observe what was
happening inside.

Upon closing the tray with a disc in it, the laser "head" moves back
and forth and up and down and I could see the laser turn on for a few
seconds, then it goes off.  The disc doesn't spin.  The "spindle"
moves freely like it should if I turn it by hand, so it is not frozen.
I am at a loss.

This drive always worked like a charm under OS 9 previously.
