Hi Don,

I just upgraded my iBook from Panther to Tiger using a disk image on a firewire drive. I'd backed up everything important and wasn't too concerned if anything disappeared. Selected all the default settings during the installation and to my surprise all the programs and data were unchanged. Had about 1 GB less on the 40GB drive than before the installation.

Of course, YMMV!

Any advice and / or experience with this question would be appreciated.

I have a G5 iMac currently running on MacOS 10.3.8 with a 160GB HD (not currently partitioned). I use a 200GB Firewire external HD with two equal sized partitions ( approx. 100GB each ). The first partition contains my cloned back-up ( via SuperDuper ), of my G5 iMac , with the second partition containing various jpeg picture files and PDF files.

I want to upgrade my OS 10.3.8 to OS X 10.4 (Tiger) but don’t want to possibly jeopardize any current files. Can I install Mac OS X 10.4 to the second partition ot the external Firewire drive and use that partition to boot Tiger on this G5 iMac, and thus learn to use Tiger and gradually upgrade the installed third party software with the goal of ultimately using it to clone back to the then partitioned 160GB main hard-drive of the G5 iMac.

I don’t know if I am confusing info about the first partition requirement of the beige G3 for Mac OS X, with the possibilities of the G5 iMac.
Thank you. Any help appreciated.
Don
