I tried with Firmare update 2.4 & 4.18
Both won't go. Held the button down until the end of the long beep,
and then tried at the start of the beep.
Everytime I got a message say it didn't work.
In thje read me it said I would see a message onscreen, never anything

Did you run the update from the HD? You can't run it off the CD.
Did you run the update in Mac OS 9.1 or later, _not_ Classic?

I ran it in 9.2.1, off the HD...still no go

I finally was able to get the firmware update working.
A friend gave a spare G4 400 CPU, popped it in an everythings jake :-)

Thanks to those who replied...........
