The Register has it right.

The x86 Macs are simply computers, just like=20
Wintel boxes. Right now, the only real diff in=20
the hardware is that the Macs use EFI and the=20
Wintel boxes use BIOS. If hackers can wedge BIOS=20
support into OS X then (+/- a few other issues)=20
it will run on standard wintel boxes.

But is a Macintel an x86 machine? Or how is this?

Microsoft and Intel have jointly defined the standard PC (x86) platform. The spec docs are available via microsoft.com and intel.com. That platform spec talks about which buses are supported, how they talk to the x86 processor, etc. Since Apple has included very little proprietary hardware in the x86 Macs, they actually conform to the PC spec fairly well.

That's why the recent alpha & beta-test x86 OS X could be booted on so many generic x86 boxes. And that's why, once MS Windows Vista supports EFI, it will bootable on the x86 Macs.

What we want is Mac OS X.
If we can have it on without the $$$$$ hardware, ...

Yes, lets have OSX on cheap ugly boxes with no support for either machine nor peripherals...

Obviously, there are trade-offs.

Personally, I'd rather have OS X on a cheap ugly box than pay thru the nose for a new Mac. Many of my clients feel that way too - that's why they run 7300s,Smurfs, etc. Besides, that ugly box lives under the desk - where noone sees it except the cat.
