Well, I have a stereo receiver made in the 90s hooked up to mine. I
used to have one that I think was made in the 80s, but a switch went bad
on it. Anyway, my speakers are shelf speaker made in the 90s. Sounds
spectacular. I plan on adding 2 more speakers at some point.
But, if you want some of the new technology that is available, Id
suggest a new receiver. They have 5.1 and 7.1 systems out now. Whereas
older systems only have 2 channels, a 5.1 has 5 channels and a dedicated
sub channel, and 7.1 has 7 channels and a dedicated sub channel. These
are also known as surround sound.
Now, if you dont know, a channel has its own sounds going to it. So
with my older setup, even though I can have 4 speakers hooked up, I only
have 2 channels and therefore this is not actual surround sound, even
though you would be surrounded by sound.
All of this hooks up to the headphone port. So this is analog sound.
A lot of new receivers have USB connectors which provides digital sound
which is better quality. But I am totally happy with my analog setup.
You can get an old receiver for about $20 or $30, and you can find a set
of speakers real cheap too. Anyway, just a word of caution, if your
receiver is rated for 200 WATTs, and you hook up 2 50 WATT speakers,
dont turn the volume on the receiver more than half way or you could
damage your speakers. If you have 4 50 WATT speakers on a 200 WATT
receiver, you can crank it all the way.
Anyway a lot of people will probably suggest using a digital setup but
like I said, you can setup an analog setup using used equipment and have
really awesome sound.
