This looks very botched to me. Happily I still had my week-old clone from which I started up and cloned that one back to my main drive. Problem solved. What the heck ... Another strong argument to get a second disk for cloning I reckon, big disks being very cheap and all. Back up, people! It's never been easier. And OSX still has its mysteries ...
