I was recently confronted with a brand new iMac G5 with the same problem -- Main help menu came up blank. I wound up calling Apple support and they walked me through a bunch of deletes of various preference files.

I have no recollection of what they were, but it is working now.

Listers,
I think I missed the thread on Help Help. My OS 10.4.5 shoots
blanks from the help pulldown. If I pulldown Help, the window is empty. If I
hit the Home button on the window, it gives a Help startpage, so to speak,
but the links are all dead????????
