This email just arrived. I pass it along unedited.
Dear Friends,
I hope all is well with you and yours. We just finished our 6th
season of excavation at Tiberias on Thursday. Unfortunately on that
same day, Prof. Yizhar Hirschfeld passed away at a hospital in
Jerusalem.Yizhar had a stroke on last Saturday night and was rushed
to the emergency room. The doctors tried operating on him twice but
could not stop the bleeding in his skull cavity. He was connected to
life support for 4 days and passed away on Thursday. His funeral was
held Friday Nov. 17, at Ma'ale Ha-hamisha which is a little outside
of Jerusalem. The ceremony was conducted by family members and
colleagues. I believe it would have been to Yizhar's liking. His
father, brother, sister and daughters will be "sitting Shiva" at
Yizhar's home in Moza; (observing a week of mourning; held for the
deceased during which friends and family can come visit, reminisce
and show support for the close family). The phone number there is:
+972-2-534-2965. If you wish to write something for them for me to
pass along, i will be more than happy to do so, just send it to this
e-mail address.
I do not know yet what will happen with the excavations at Tiberias
or with the publications of Ramat Hanadiv and other articles which
Yizhar was working on. I hope to be able to update our web page in
the near future with information, but it will take a bit of time to
organize. In any case, i will keep this e-mail account working and
available to whomever would like to be in touch. I do hope we will be
able to carry on with the work he so unfortunately had cut so short.
I am sorry to be the bearer of such difficult news.
