I have recently tried to install Ubuntu linux on IBM hardware, a system that used to be supported and ran linux (as well as netBSD and FreeBSD): it didn't work. There was no workaround. Rumors of Apple's imminent demise have been around for 15 years: right now their market cap is 150 Billion Dollars (that's billion with a B). Dell's is 44Bn. HP's is just under 6Bn.
