It seems like problems with Apple Mail continue... everything from it suddenly quitting to freezing up while displaying certain messages. You re-launch and Mail goes right back to the same freezing or quitting!
In general, the solution seems to be to wipe out its preferences. But then you lose your account settings! Who remember all their account settings. yuk. So... Here's a way to create some sense of safety... 1. Quit Mail. 2. Open your ~/Library/Preferences/ folder and find the file "com.apple.mail.plist". Select it. Hit cmd-D to make a copy. Right there, in place, it will create "com.apple.mail copy.plist". Just leave that file sit right there. 3. Open your ~/Library/ folder and find the Mail folder. Select it. Use the contextual menu to create an archive of it. You can leave the newly created "Mail.zip" file right there, or push it to a backup disk. Now... Next time Mail dies on you, you have an easy way out! You can trash its prefs and replace them with a copy of the known-good prefs file you just created! And if that doesn't work, you also have a full backup of your main Mail folder! I do this sort of thing with a lot of preferences files and such. It creates a hot-backup redundancy on your hard drive and then it all gets copied again when you make your off-line backups.
