A case in point. a friend of mine bought a new machine that ran very
hot. it crashed repeatedly due to heat. She tried the non powered
supports and found them totally useless to solve the problem. Why? She
is bed ridden and sitting up in bed supporting the laptop on her legs
with covers and blankets in a position she could manage blocks the air
flow with the passive cooler. Even if she uses the passive cooler on a
flat tray table this machine with multiprocessors and big screen runs
too hot.

Many powered fan coolers however draw air from the side rather than
the bottom and redirect it upward. It works in her case.
