It took about four minutes, the arrow appeared, I selected the partition with a 
working OS 10.4.11 and voila I'm back in business and typing this from the G$ 
DA.

What you should see, is an Icon for each 'bootable' system available.  
It takes a while, so be patient, till the cursor pops back to 'normal'.
You then select which system to boot, and hit return or click on the  
"Right Arrow" box.

Then ------------ once into the desired system ---- FIRST thing, go  
to System Preferences, Startup Disk, and make your selection.

Getting there using the 'option' on boot-up method does NOT change  
the 'Boot' selection stored in NVRAM [I.E. YOUR default boot location.]
