Could be a Finder Preference. If you go to Finder>Preferences in the  
tab General>Show these items on Desktop has the box "External disks"  
checked.

If if is checked, uncheck it, close, open again and recheck it. If the  
HD is still not shown, go to Disk Utility and run "Repair Disk" on it,  
and then "mount".
