The Mac's BONG is a functional sound - it indicates that the 
self-test has successfully completed.  It is replaced by other sounds 
if something fails.

That blert played by Windoze is just a ripoff thing.  It doesn't mean anything.

Gotta wake the user up.  Unacceptable to let them die of boredom or
