For ram, you need low density sticks. The cheapest 512MB sticks on  
the market are all high density and will not work in a Mac. Even some  
cheap low density sticks will not work.

I am not a memory geek, but the underlying theory is that low density  
memory is better, and that is why Apple required it.

The options you have are:

By memory guaranteed to work in an Mac and pay the Apple tax

Buy cheap pc sticks off ebay avoiding those that say that they will  
not work on Macs or that they are high density. No guarantee that  
they will work in your Mac, but if you buy them right, you may be  
able to resell them for what you paid and not take too much of a hit.
