Turns out I did have one installed on the DA running 10.4.11, my network laser printer. I just printed a message from Mail and the icon popped into the dock with a piece of paper in front of it. When the item had been printed the entire icon went away, as it should. Doesn't work that way in Leopard. I just get an icon of the printer, no paper in front of it, and the icon remains until I manually close it. Seems like a step backwards to me.
