After reading Kris' comments (Re: mds & mdworker eating up the  
processor?) I found that I failed to search the above problem first.  
Sure enough, Google search gave me the answer.

For those who are unenlightened as to the fix, and since I'm now on  
the correct list,
I'll share it with you all:

        "Zoom was accidently turned 'ON'.
        Go to System Preferences/Universal Access and turn it 'OFF' "
