They're in console and system log; search for "spotlight". If the -E command isn't wiping out the index, you can always rm it manually. Just remove all the files from the top-level .Spotlight-V100 directory on that volume. Then do the -i on, and it WILL rebuild. At that point, you could have Console open, watching the system log... so you can see any errors that come in...
