Essentially, that put an alias to the volume in the startupitems folder. That alias was then *opened* by Finder - the same as a double-click action. So it is intended and expected that it would open the window. If you want the volume to mount on your desktop without opening the window, then you'll need to do just that -- actually mount the volume, not tell Finder mount and open it!
