I would to make a Mac OS X volume, but just enough of it to back up my setting, and my "user" name to log on, not a whole Boot disk, and have it on my USB jump disk, and have just enough of "System" and "Finder" for the "Migration Assistant" to see it as an OS X to migrate my "User" from.
