Did you try no password at all?  Did you ask the people who reloaded 
Vista what password they used?  I realize that it may be hard to speak 
with the techs at a repair center you send a computer in to, but there 
should be an agreed upon password that is used in all re-installs.  I am 
not completely familiar with Vista since my district has refused to 
switch to it, but I played with it at home and hated it.  There should 
be some setting in the network connections control which will allow that 
laptop to be seen on the network.
