On another (non-Mac related) email list I've been on for a long time (nigh unto 15 years now...this has been a very long-lived community), it's called the "Black Hole of Quality" Arguments equivalent to "how many angels can stand on the head of a pin" will rage on for weeks, but someone makes a meaty and substantive post and all you hear is the whirr-whirr-whirr of hard drives as folks sock that one away for reference and later perusal. FWIW, Thanks...your post helped me deal with a bunch of annoying dupes in my library.
