Well, I was just informed by email - in an extremely friendly and helpful way - that there's another group to discuss G3-5 laptops. I dislike the Balkanization, but that's life...
So if anyone had something to add to this discussion, they'd better get themselves down to the laptop group, or risk getting their wrists smacked by a well-aimed ruler.
