Volumes shared between users should be owned by system, admin should
have read & write access, then others should have just read access.
The top level directories therein control things further, of course.

Timing is everything. Only the boot volume is mounted initially.
Other volumes are mounted (and their file systems checked)
asynchronously, later ... and if the user login and such beats the
mount,,, then things aren't accessible yet.

There's nothing wrong with your set-up per se, as long as you're
willing to deal with the launch database sync errors (because apps
are in the wrong place) and the timing issues (such as you've seen).
Myself - I wouldn't do that and I won't recommend anyone do it like
that.
