I too just found this thread after just posting an elaborate red herring about correct versions for Internet Connect and Network.prefpane..DUH I was too near the trees to find the forest as I was searching Internet Connect and not the alert message. I followed the directions below and worked the first time!

They changed the way PPP and PPPoE passwords are maintained on your system". Solution: "In Security (System Preferences) Click unlock and authenticate. Enable(check): 'Password required to unlock the preferences system secured' Click to relock lock... authenticate Go to Network pane, (Alert window goes away with first click) click on "lock" icon in lower left corner, enter password and you should be able to change settings. This is what I did and it works fine now".
