All logs are available thru the Console app, 
/Applications/Utilities/Console.app

...Select "Show Log List" from Console's View menu.  As you can see 
there are a lot of logs!  system.log contains system-wide events - 
things like the Time Machine failures.  console.log contains your 
user events.  Everything there is r/o (read-only), so peruse at will 
- you cannot hurt anything.  If the log listed won't open then you'll 
need to run console from an admin account.
