Howdy,
  If you can read files from the flash drive, there are two reasons I
have seen why writing fails.
  The most common is that you have too many files in the root directory.
Flash drives typically are formatted with a FAT filesystem of some kind.
When you format a FAT drive(FAT16 or FAT32 or whatever), you specify how
many files are allowed in the root directory.  Different Flash
manufacturers may have picked different values, so I can't tell you what
the limit is.  Directories on a FAT drives can have as many files as
will fit.  Only the root directory is limited.
  The next most common failure is a failing flash drive.  Flash drives
typically fail to write as the first failure mode.  They can usually
still be read fine.
 Your situation may be something else, since I don't know why you don't
see the flash drive as an option.
