Assuming the worst, I began shopping for a replacement video card.
Finding a post on eBay for this same card, I was browsing the specs
when my eye was caught by the minimum requirements, OS 10.4.3 or OS
10.5. If this is true, no wonder it won't go with 10.4.
Back to target mode; 10.4 install and upgrade to 10.4.11 while booted
through the Sawtooth. Reboot twice for upgrade, and it works great!
Evidently, some fundamental change in video handling occurred at
10.4.3.
