No.

SATA drives have no restriction.

The restriction is really an artificial one.

Apparently, SATA always operates in LBA48 mode, whereas PATA operates  
in LBA24 mode on QS2001 and earlier, and in LBA48 mode on QS2002 and  
later, unless forced to operate in LBA48 mode.

It is possibly to force LBA48 mode on PATA drive attached to certain  
G4 Macs.

Possibly B&W G3 Macs, although I have not tried it.
