I bought one of these adapters to run an ADC monitor off my G5's DVI
port. I think I paid around $100 at the local Apple store, and they
also are available on the Apple website. I bought it because I've got
an old 24" Apple Cinema HD Display that runs off ADC, and my G5's
video card has no ADC port. I wanted to keep using this nice big old
monitor after I moved from a G4 to this G5.
Yes, the adapter has its own power supply, and the power brick is
nearly as big as a paperback book, but it just lies here on the floor
under the desk and I never notice it. And it works great to run this
Cinema Display. It was cheaper than buying a newer Cinema Display with
DVI, which would have cost around $600, judging from what I see on
eBay.
