OS x can't read the linux file system straight off. I think you must start up with the Fedora cd. Do not use the alt/ option key, but rather use the Fedora disk as you would an OS x install disk.
Put the linux disk in the drive, restart your computer, and press the c key so your mac will start up from the optical drive.
