Hope its not too soon to claim success ... Manually removing the drivers and associated files from my 10.5.4 partition, has freed up the Leopard partition to function well, too. Under Tiger, I've tested audio under loads from iTunes 8, DVD Player, Sibelius 5 and Ableton's Live 6. Some extended periods of usage showed no garbling-out or noise, throwing in loads using the network connection.
