I did, however, find a command line option that seems to work around the problem. The --size-only parameter forces rsync to only pay attention to file size changes. This works perfectly for my situation, but may not work so well for MS Office files. I may try recompiling, but it's nice to know there's an option that will work with bog standard Apple rsync.
