Update on use of a certain SATA/IDE adapter direct plugin boards:

Considering the bidirectional SATA/IDE adapter (maybe the others, too) ... according to the Seller (Redtag folks): "Yes,it supports ATA 66,100 and 133." (perhaps that comes from "ATA/ATAPI Ultra DMA of transfer rate 16.7,25,33,48,66,100,1300, and 150MB/s.") I still question: if my mobo does not support LBA48 addressing mode, will the adapter correct this? They claim: ATA/ATAPI LBA48 addressing mode associated with 2- byte sector count. Another response from them states: "Yes,this adapter will function at ATA33. But it doesn't correct the lack of LBA48, can only work with LBA48 hard drive." I'm guessing this means if your mobo (or PCI IDE controller) doesn't acknowledge LBA48 mode, this adapter won't either, and If your mobo (or PCI IDE controller) does, then the adapter will translate accordingly. So, For my QS 2002, it should work with the onboard ATA66 and LBA48 to run SATA drives off the mobo IDE/66 channel through the adapter. For my PCI Graphics Yikes!, I would need to do the LBA48 firmware patch, then the adapter would work off the mobo IDE/33 channel. For the Sonnet ATA100, the adapter would not work because this particular ATA100 PCI card does not support LBA48 mode. For the Sonnet Trio ATA133/FW400/USB1.1, the adapter would work because the PCI card supports LBA48 mode. I'm guessing, but on my Yikes!, even with the LBA48 mode firmware patch, the Sonnet ATA100 still would not function as a >128GB drive PCI controller card, either for PATA drives or for the adapted SATA ones. Or would it? If any of this looks wrong, comments welcomed: for example regarding space ... it is a close fit down where the drives hook up to the IDE cables ... is there enough room for this added adapter and cables? I'm seeing me installing an SATA drive, adding an SATA cable to the adapter, sitting the adapter on top of the drive, and running the mobo IDE/PATA cable to that ... unless I could attach the adapter directly to the drive, and the IDE cable to it there. Any experience? Just buy a PCI SATA controller card?
