It's an email client, like Thunderbird, like Eudora, like Entourage,  
like other.... The point is to manage your email in a coherent  
fashion. They've thrown in other functionality over the years: Todo  
notes, integration with iCal, RSS feeds, etc, but mainly its function  
is to receive, read, write and send email...

It's got it's pluses and minuses like other applications, but it  
ensures that right out of the box OS X users can get to their email if  
they want. I prefer it to other clients I've tried; email apps tend to  
be a subjectively personal choice.
