Yes, lot of fonts.  But ripping 'em out, leaving only a handful of 
necessaries doesn't make a diff.

Maybe it's a utf-8/unicode issue?  Other fonts I've tried work ok.

No, checked for that.

I've tried installing the font in ~/Library/Font and in /Library/Font 
and even both at the same time.  No diff.
