Sounds reasonable. If the router has a dual use WAN/LAN port, you'll
likely need to configure it as WAN because in the default
configuration it's likely a LAN only port. If you can find the
preference to get the configuration correct, you should be able to
plug your current modem directly into the WAN port and get normal
router function.

I see not much info on the web for "Siemens 'Slipstream' 6520" but a
lot of info for "Siemens 'Speedstream' 6520", which is perhaps an
alternate name for the same device?

Also, I had a Apple Airport Extreme base station that blew out the WAN
port from a lightning strike, and I was able to successfully continue
to use it by attaching an older wired router via a LAN port, and
allowing the older router to set the DHCP addresses, effectively
making that Airport a passive pass-thru wireless connection. If you
have an old wired router, that could also be an option if you can't
get the WAN port working normally and just want to get a wireless
connection working. I wasn't using any encryption, my network is open,
so that could cause issues perhaps if your network is encrypted?
