I once had a Beige with somewhat similar problems. Turned out the ROM chip contacts were dirty or not making connection. I removed the ROM chip and cleaned the gold contacts with a rubber eraser and then replace it, making sure it was properly seated in the slot, and all was well. Sometimes reseating all the slotted chips, ROM, RAM, PCI and video cards can help.
