Well as a certified geek, I'm going to come at yah with a radical
suggestion:

Convert it to a html archive with an application like Hypermail or
MHonArc.

"SUMMARY

MHonArc is a Perl program for converting mail or news messages
into HTML archives. It can also be used to convert individual
messages into HTML documents. Other capabilities include robust
MIME support and powerful user customization features."

I've used this to archive large email folders. It then generates a
large folder full of a bazillion HTML files that lets you traverse the
archive by author, by date, by thread, etc.

Typically this is used to archive mailing lists and suchlike; I've
used it to archive PBEM RPG games.

This releases you from hanging on to any given mail format, and in
worse case scenario, the archive is human readable.
