This is neither quick, nor dirty; this is a Mac, not Windows. I  
recommend an Archive & INstall upgrade, meaning that after you select  
the volume to install 10.5 on, click on the Options button.

Select Archive & Install, and leave the 'Keep user files' checked.

This gives you a clean OS install, while retaining all other settings.

You will need to re-install third party drivers and preference panes.

This has worked for me flawlessly dozens and dozens of times.
