A very good point.

My personal experience with both, Motorola and IBM is that neither of
these companies had a "can do" property.

Way back in the early 1990's when I was working tech support for Apple
and the PPC was just making its entry into the line up, IBM was supposed
to come up with a way of making PS-2 (?) compatible with the new PPC
chips. Well it never did but Apple with much more limited resources did
make its 68xxx machines compatible. That also was the timeframe where
IBM was nearly in the same state as GM is in today. A total unflexible
unwieldly entity that was virtually paralyzed.

IBM has a good sized campus here in Austin and in the late 1990's when I
was doing contract work with Applied Materials, I took a short term job
with a company that had just bought out IBM's facility for making laptop
circuit boards.

I was astounded at the condition of the plant and equipement. Something
one would expect to find in a third world country. So poorly did this
place perform could be illustrated by the fact that an over fifty
percent scrap rate was accepted.

Turning to Motorola, well their brandy new billion plus chip facility
(strictly PPC) was no better. In fact, they might have been worse than
IBM as they (as far as I know) hardly produced any G4s. This facility is
one of two here in Austin that were spun off and are now know as FreeScale.

That's my 5ยข worth...
