This question would be better asked on the iMac list. Funny, I just pulled the optical drive from a G3 iMac. There isn't enough room there. Part of the drive hangs over the logic board. A drive in your "spare space" would conflict with the logic board. Also, there is no available drive interface. If you pulled the optical there MIGHT be enough space. You'd need to make your own IDE cable as the logic board connector is 44 pins, as is the optical drive connector.
