The cause of my problems...  Overcrowded desktop!  I simply took 
everything off the desktop that was not necessary and put it into a 
single folder.

OSX does not like a lot of junk on the desktop. This has happened to me 
several times as I just drop a lot of stuff there (like dragging 
pictures of the net etc.).

Anywhat, I hope that this proves helpful to others that tend to be slobs 
er, ah, I mean... well you know..
