Faulty ethernet cable.

Dying interface - shorted or zapped by a power surge.

Connect the ethernet to a hub, switch, or other mac. Turn on TCP/IP
and see if the green light comes on and stays on.

If connected to another Mac, then turn on AppleTalk. If AppleTalk
over ethernet will come up then the interfaces are working.
