I'm having a printing problem on my G5 w/10.5.8 and HP LaserJet 4
printer attached via a USB-parallel adapter connection. The printer
has worked fine with identical setup for several years.

Things I've done:

Deleted and re-added the printer in Printing & Fax preferences.

Checked that CUPS was running.

Rebooted the System (several times).

The symptoms are always the same, I press "Print" and get a window
saying the "Printer is Paused". If I hit the "Resume Printer" I get
"Printer is Ready", but the job is stopped. I press "Resume" button
(for the job) I get a message "Operation Not Possible: client-error-
not-possible". If I delete the job while the "Printer is Ready" and
then print again, this causes the printer to "pause" again, so it's a
vicious circle.

The CUPS page http://127.0.0.1:631/ loads normally, but if I press
"Manage Printers" (http://127.0.0.1:631/printers) the page gives the
Spinning Beachball until finally it "times out" with and error page
saying "the server unexpectedly dropped the connection".

If I use the Terminal command "lp -info", I get the reply "bus error".

I thought perhaps there was a problem with the USB-Parallel adapter,
but the correct kext is loaded, and the adapter (a Prolific PL-2305)
is shown in System Profiler as working.

I've checked the driver for the printer several times, and repaired
permissions "just in case". Nothing seems to work.

I'm out of ideas. Anyone?
