What? Gentoo Linux.
Why? Because it is fun to make your own and unique system. I wouldn't 
recommend it thou because it makes you go very deep into Linux itself.

I think you could install the original OS version using borrowed installation 
media. Shouldn't be a problem legally.

http://edubuntu.org/

Edubuntu is not what you're looking for? Ubunutu uses Debian as its base and 
is a stable system. The Edubuntu distribution is basically a regular Ubuntu 
Linux with a special software collection and a different styling.

I'm not sure if there is a PPC port for it, but since there is a community 
edition of Ubuntu around it might be worth looking.
