Ubunutu uses Debian as its base and is a stable system. The Edubuntu distribution is basically a regular Ubuntu Linux with a special software collection and a different styling. I'm not sure if there is a PPC port for it, but since there is a community edition of Ubuntu around it might be worth looking.
