IMO the GraphicConverter is one of the best apps ever (I use it since a version 1.7.6 appeared in ~1994). With 5.9.3 it got so many functions, it is nearly as useful as Photoshop. It is loaded much faster and: look at the pricing. A Version 6.something is also available for a few dollars. There are updates every few weeks. And it is better than iPhoto anyway (i hated iPhoto the first moment I used it).
Use a simple card reader if you can't attach the camera directly. Maybe there is some dirt or corrosion in the cameras slots.
