Just the other way 'round; updating to 9 or 9.1 slowed down (603e/ev) machines VERY significantly. I recommend a 8.6 if you don't use iTunes or other apps requiring 9. OSX is slower (if it runs) on them enyway. With an iMac CRT/350MHz it's ... undescribable, unendurable.
